Over the past few years, front power-assist units have grown increasingly popular, letting manual wheelchair users travel quickly outdoors. That’s fantastic for users, but these systems are often fitted to wheelchairs that weren’t designed to go outside. Using this kind of power assist prematurely wears out indoor wheelchairs, which are often expensive, and it can make the ride uncomfortable, even unstable and unsafe.
The all-terrain wheelchairs we build (the HP Plus) already offer the option of a rear axle with suspension, and we wanted to make that option available for most types of rigid manual wheelchairs. That’s now possible thanks to the universal ShockZ axle.
The ShockZ rear axle is lightweight and installs just behind your wheelchair’s current axle in seconds. You can then keep your own wheels or take the opportunity to fit knobby all-terrain wheels, and you’re ready to head out onto the rougher terrain you’ve been wanting to explore. On top of being stable and comfortable, the axle angle can be adjusted to maximize the camber of your rear wheels, adding grip when used with a front power wheel by increasing the wheelchair’s wheelbase.
